Dark Chocolate Anniversary Cake

I made this cake for some close friends of mine. I surprised them with it today for there 29th wedding anniversary. Their daughter is a dear friend of mine and she graduated high school on Friday and her parents threw her graduation party today which happened to be there wedding anniversary. She had me make them a cake because she appreciated her parents doing something special for her on their special day.

The cake is a dark chocolate, 8 inch double round, layered and covered with homemade chocolate butter cream icing. All flower and leave decorations are gumpaste.

Pink and Red

I have been excited about this cake all week. I started working on the gum paste details a few days ago.
All the details are gum paste. The cake is vanilla covered with vanilla butter cream and a "hint" of strawberry fondant. I will post more pictures tomorrow.

Pink Rose

I am attempting more realistic looking roses. They are much more involved but as a friend of mine pointed out, with some practice they will become easier and more second nature. I am "pleased" with these but can't wait to give it another try because I know each time will only get better. I added a little shimmer powder to this one and that is why it looks glittery. I may not do this in the future but have been wanting to give the dust a little try :)

Practice Roses

This morning I wanted to play with some fondant because after all, practice makes perfect. I had an idea for a way to do the roses that is a bit different than the way I have been shown so far.

Thank you cake!

I made a cake in appreciation of all the hard work and kindness our vet has shown to Scout and to us as a family. They LOVED the cake!

The cake itself is a marble cake (chocolate and vanilla) and the icing is cream cheese and chocolate fondant.

I sure hope they enjoy!

I have to add that I cannot take full credit for the dog itself...John helped me with the face...Thank you darling!!! :)

Something Blue

The fondant I made for class this past week turned out to be a bit too soft but I hated to see it go to waste so I decided to make a small cake this afternoon to keep my mind busy. Sure there's a ton of laundry to do but that's not near as fun :)

This is a six inch chocolate, double layer round cake covered with homemade kahlua buttercream and fondant icing. My mom will be happy to know I used gloves and plan to use gloves always when working with fondant. My mom thinks it's gross to have someone else's hands all over the icing...good point.

So, with my hands washed and my gloves on I worked at hardening up the fondant enough to hopefully cover a cake. I am pretty pleased with the result.

I am discovering that fondant, while it has endless possibilities is not as easy to work with as I had hoped. Practice makes perfect and I intend to master fondant even if it takes me a long time. I hope part of the reason this was difficult to smooth was because I didn't add enough sugar to begin with, making any decorations I tried more difficult to mold. This is a learning process.

Yellow Fondant Roses

This cake was a challenge. I had a hard day yesterday (our cat was put to sleep) but needed to do a cake for class that night. Needless to say I was not in a very creative mood or in the mood to do cake period. I really thought hard about not even going to class but in the end figured it might be good to try and get my mind off of things for a few hours. I ended up coming home with a fondant covered but naked cake. I didn't have it in me to try and decorate it. So, I woke up this morning and attempted to repair the fondant that was poorly covering my cake and made some simple roses to top it. It didn't turn out too bad all things considered. I would have liked a smoother finish for sure but it is what it is and any practice is better than none. I am taking it to a dear friend of mine in a little while. I hope it taste better than it looks. :)

Trying a new cake recipe..."Chocolate Kahlua Cake".

I am making a chocolate Kahlua cake today with chocolate Kahlua icing. The house smells sooo good.  I am not decorating this cake. I am simply going to cover this cake with chocolaty goodness, slice and enjoy with friends. I admit that as much as I enjoy decorating cakes it is nice to just make a cake for a BBQ with no worries about damaging decorations during transport! :) It's gonna be a good day.

I will post a picture and let you all know later how it tasted.

Well the cake was delicious! Everyone loved it. The icing became a bit melty in the humidity today but once we got it in the AC it was fine. I personally thought the icing was a bit too sweet but the others said it was great, so I think this recipe is a keeper. I will have to perfect the icing if I am to use this recipe as a decorated cake. Overall it was a success!
